A Day Away
Mesquite, Nevada–With 108 holes in a community of roughly 15,000 people, Mesquite has as many golf holes per capita as nearly any city in America.
And it’s a good thing there are so many golfing opportunities because the weather here promotes year-round play with a winter high in the mid-60s.
Very few communities host as many annual national golf events either. Among them are the Duff Challenge, the Mesquite Amateur and the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship.
Mesquite hosts top of the line accommodations and there are custom packages available for golfers to coordinate their choice of hotel with their selection of golf choices.
On the list for golf are a number of fabulous courses with the most diverse being The Oasis, Mesquite’s only 36-hole facility which features The Palmer and The Canyons courses.
The Palmer is a par-71 course offering a choice of five tees, rugged canyon fairways and contour greens and a scenic backdrop of panoramic desert. Golf Digest rated it among the “Top 10 You Can Play.” The Canyons course is 18 holes designed to complement the already challenging and scenic Palmer course. The large fairways and Bermuda greens make the course player friendly and a refreshing change of pace.
CasaBlanca Golf Club features an 18-hole, 7,011-yard championship course designed by Cal Olson. The 18 holes wind through the region’s natural desert wetlands offering views of the nearby Virgin River Mountains.
Coral Canyon is in St. George, Utah, a stone’s throw from Mesquite. This course’s intent is to challenge even the most skilled golfer. These 18 holes wend their way around some of the area’s natural land formations giving the course a sense of personality. This par-72, 7,029-yard layout designed by Keith Foster features 80 acres of turf, 55 sand bunkers, two lakes and a labyrinth of dry washes among the scenic red rock outcroppings.
Falcon Ridge Golf Club’s 6,550 yard, par-71 desert layout has spectacular elevation changes, numerous water features and high mesa views along a highly playable track for all levels of golfers. Wolf Creek at Paradise Canyon, another honored by Golf Digest, was chosen as one of the top three new upscale public courses in the United States. Fairways wind naturally through the brown rock walls and five tee placements make this intriguing course accessible to all.
The Ledges Golf Club is another in St. George, which capitalizes on the red rock backdrops to balance out the immaculately designed greens overlooking the St. George valley.
They call it the “playing in a postcard” experience. Holes on this Matt Dye course are said to be carefully crafted for a unique experience.
The Palms Golf Club has a front nine with extended fairways to please long drivers. The back nine is a mountainous course where placement is key. The 15th hole has a breathtaking view and a vertical drop of 114 feet.
St. George’s Entrada at Snow Canyon was designed by Johnny Miller and encases many memorable holes including four that take you through an ancient volcanic bed of lava rocks. This course calls for your best game, but win or lose, the views are breathtaking.
But Mesquite’s not just about golf. The city fathers boast that it’s a 24-7, 365 days a year destination with several luxury spas, restaurants, four casinos to get your gaming action and nearby national parks without the congestion and high prices of other areas.
And it’s easy to get to. Mesquite is located conveniently just 80 miles from Las Vegas, 35 miles from St. George, and 50 miles from Zion National Park, one of the most beautiful parks in America.
